I specialise in working with people with learning disabilities and the organisations who represent them. The book I wrote with Kelley Johnson in 2003 on Inclusive Research with People with Learning Disabilities remains the definitive account, and has been quoted in well over 200 books and articles
Inclusive research and co-production are the bedrock of my practice.
This includes oral history and life history workshops and publications. Have a look at the agenda for this workshop I prepared for 20 people brought together by East Kent Mencap and Kent and Medway NHS Trust east-kent-life-story-workshop-plan. The photo on this page shows people practising interviewing one another at the workshop.
I also work alongside self advocacy organisations to do research and develop capacity and capability. This is the Report of some work I did with Ian Davies, former Chair of Central England People First, to make some recommendations on how they could modernise report-to-central-england-people-first
It was fascinating to find out how 8 self advocacy organisations resolve the difficult questions of who should advise the Trustees, manage staff and manage the budget, not to mention how they attracted younger members to join.
Current projects include working with All Wales People First who have successfully bid to DRILL (the National Lottery) to create a tool which will help self advocacy organisations, and those who commission them to evaluate their projects - see the details on this link http://www.drilluk.org.uk/
